LONG CANE ULTRA WEEKEND50K - SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2013 - 7:30 AM

The course for the 55 mile is a double loop consisting of a 50K figure-8 loop followed by a 23 mile loop, same loop in reverse without doing the cut-through trail, plus a short out-and-back from the picnic pavillon by the lake at Parson's Mountain Recreation Area in Sumter National Forest. The 50K course will go from the start/finish at the picnic pavillon and cover only the figure-8 loop. The shaded trail covers diverse terrain, passing through the ancient hills and valleys that abut the upper Savannah River, and crosses the Long Cane Scenic Area with its tall trees and unusual vegetation. There are some rocks, some roots, stream crossings, road crossings, but a very runnable trail. There will be 5 fully-stocked aid stations with a wide variety of food and drinks for the 50K, 10 aid stations for the 55 Mile, food at the finish, no cut-off times and unique awards to all finishers. Mandatory to carry at least one water bottle. Course is marked with white blazes painted on trees plus additional orange ribbons, orange flags and signs. Directions to start: From Abbeville - Take SC Hwy 72 southwest for about 2 miles. Turn left (south) on SC Hwy 28, go about 2 miles, turn left on Parsons Mountain Road, Abbeville County S-1-251. Continue 1.5 miles to entrance of Parson's Mountain Recreation Area. Day use fee is $3. Be sure to pay the fee or you will probably get a ticket. Accommodations: Camping at Parsons Mountain Recreation Area, first-come, first serve, no reservations can be made, 23 sites, flush toilets, showers, water, $7 fee per night. This is a nice campground, there is swimming in the lake, and a great place to bring the family for the weekend. Additional primitive camping nearby at Fell Hunt Camp, $5 fee per night. Motels in Greenwood and Abbeville.
